Using the choice triad: Combining choice architecture, infrastructure, and posture to address behavioral systems challenges

Improving ‘choice architecture’ to help people make better, more informed decisions is a familiar cornerstone of applied behavioral science practice. Yet considering two additional aspects of choice environments—how the underlying ‘plumbing’ of choice infrastructure supports how systems functions, and how diverse choice postures, or incoming predispositions and assumptions of actors and agents, shape how they perceive options—can increase the potential effectiveness of behavioral approaches.  This can be especially true when navigating complex challenges, where different system participants may have different viewpoints about what a good outcome even looks like and underlying system infrastructures can impact our ability to construct viable, accessible, and equitably beneficial solutions.
