Technology: Tool or Trainer? Addressing behavioral and decision-making 'plumbing' in healthcare

When do can use technology in healthcare, and when does it use us?

Findings from behavioral science have indicated that patients sometimes fail to behave as they know they should, less due to a lack of knowledge than behavioral tendencies and environmental conditions that interfere with doing the right thing. But the structural, organizational, and technological “plumbing” that supports clinical practice can also shape behaviors, especially as our reliance on technology and data grows. Greater insight into how behaviors are shaped by the design of tools and technology can help clinicians expand strategies for patient care and recognize how their own environments influence their behaviors. Delivered at the University of Chicago’s Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation, May 18, 2022.
